Who is this budget for?
Include only the income, expenses and cash available to the people in this budget.
This is about whose money is included, not your relationship status. A personal budget can include more than one income.
What does living paycheck to paycheck mean?
Living paycheck to paycheck generally means relying on your next payday to cover ongoing expenses, with little money left over. This calculator shows your monthly balance and cash reserves separately, rather than assigning a universal risk score.
What this budget check can tell you
A positive monthly balance and a cash cushion measure different things. You may cover your bills each month but still have little protection if income stops. Monthly averages also cannot tell you whether a bill arrives before payday.

Questions about your inputs, results and the limits of this calculator.
How do I know if I am living paycheck to paycheck?
Start with your take-home income minus your monthly expenses, then look at your accessible savings separately. Little or no monthly surplus can mean you depend on the next payday to keep up with bills. This tool shows that balance and your cash runway; it does not use a universal cutoff to label you financially safe or unsafe.
Start your budget checkCan I be living paycheck to paycheck with savings?
Yes. You may have savings but spend nearly all of each paycheck, or regularly use those savings to cover a shortfall. A positive bank balance does not necessarily mean your monthly budget is sustainable. Enter only savings available to this budget, excluding money already committed to other bills.
Should I enter gross income or take-home pay?
Use take-home pay after taxes and payroll deductions. Do not subtract those same deductions again as expenses. You can add more than one income and choose how often each arrives. This is a budget calculator, not a payroll tax calculator.
Which expenses should I include in my budget?
Include housing, basic groceries, utilities, transport, insurance premiums and minimum debt payments as necessary expenses. Put spending you could reduce, such as entertainment, in flexible expenses. Divide predictable annual bills by 12 and include that monthly amount. Count each bill once, especially in a shared household.
How long will my savings last if I lose my income?
The no-income estimate divides available cash by monthly spending, assuming all included income stops and spending stays constant. For example, $6,000 in cash and $2,000 in monthly expenses gives 3 months. If you are already spending more than you earn, the shortfall estimate instead divides cash by that monthly gap. Neither calculation predicts when an unexpected expense will occur.
Estimate your savings runwayIs my emergency fund target based on income or expenses?
This tool bases your target on necessary monthly expenses multiplied by the number of months you choose. For example, $2,000 of necessary expenses and a 3-month target gives $6,000. The target is a preference you set, not a guarantee that a particular reserve will cover every emergency.
Calculate your reserve targetDoes “above your reserve target” mean I can spend that money?
It shows cash remaining after protecting your chosen reserve target, provided your entered budget is not already in deficit. It is not a spending recommendation. Check upcoming bills and other commitments before treating that amount as available. No allowance is shown without a usable target.
How can I stop living paycheck to paycheck?
Use the result to identify the problem first. A monthly shortfall calls for comparing realistic expense reductions and income changes. If income covers expenses but bills arrive before payday, review payment dates and your balance between paydays. If the issue is a small reserve, choose a savings target and include planned contributions in your own spending plan. This version does not model bill dates or automate savings contributions.
Find your next stepWhere does the calculator’s data come from?
The current results use only the income, expenses, cash and reserve target you enter. No C2ER, HUD, Census or other city dataset is used in the live calculation yet. Regional references are planned; once available, they will need a source, statistical period and geographic coverage shown beside each value.
Is this free, and are my financial details saved?
