How to calculate financial runway
No income: accessible savings ÷ monthly expenses. Ongoing income below expenses: accessible savings ÷ (monthly expenses − monthly take-home income).
A simple example
$5,000 cash and $3,000 monthly spending gives about 1.7 months without income. With $2,800 monthly income continuing, the $200 gap gives 25 months. Both assume unchanged amounts and no extra costs.

How do I calculate how long my savings will last?
If all income stops, divide accessible savings by monthly spending. With ongoing income below spending, divide savings by the monthly shortfall instead. These answer different questions and should not be substituted for each other.
Can my savings last longer if I still earn some income?
Yes. For example, $5,000 in savings and $3,000 monthly spending gives about 1.7 months without income. If $2,800 of monthly income continues, the gap is $200, so those savings could cover about 25 months of that gap. This example assumes no changes or additional costs.
What if my income already covers my expenses?
There is no monthly shortfall in the budget you entered, so this model does not calculate an exhaustion time from regular spending. That does not mean savings can cover every emergency. The separate no-income estimate still shows what would happen if all included income stopped.
Should I include investments or my credit limit?
Use cash and savings you can access for this budget. Do not count a credit limit as savings. Money already committed to another bill should not be counted twice. This calculator does not model investment returns, selling costs or retirement withdrawal rules.
Is financial runway the same as an emergency fund target?
No. Runway estimates how long existing cash can cover spending or a shortfall. An emergency fund target is an amount you choose to keep in reserve. Reaching zero cash and falling below your preferred reserve are different events.
Does this calculator include inflation, unexpected bills or local living costs?
No. It uses the income, expenses and cash you enter, held constant over the estimated period. Include a monthly share of predictable annual bills in your expenses. Long estimates become less dependable as circumstances change; this is not a guaranteed date.
Will my entries carry over to the other tools?
Yes, when you use links within this site in the same tab. This page shares your current budget with the budget check and pay cut calculator. Refreshing clears entries unless you choose to save a draft on this device. There is no account or server-side budget storage.
