BUDGET SETUP

Who is this budget for?

Include only the income, expenses and cash available to the people in this budget.

This is about whose money is included, not your relationship status. A personal budget can include more than one income.

How this pay cut calculator works

Choose the income that would change, then enter a reduction in monthly dollars or percent. The calculator subtracts that reduction from your take-home income and compares the remainder with your spending.

Use take-home pay, not gross salary

A 10% cut in gross salary does not necessarily mean a 10% cut in take-home pay. Enter an estimated after-tax change. Check changes to benefits and commuting costs separately.

Pay cut calculator FAQ

Questions about your inputs, results and the limits of this calculator.

How much of a pay cut can I afford?

At unchanged spending, your current monthly surplus is the amount of take-home income you could lose before the budget moves into a shortfall. For example, $4,000 of take-home income and $3,500 of expenses leaves $500 per month. Losing exactly $500 leaves no surplus for additional saving or costs missing from your budget. It is a break-even limit, not a recommended pay cut.

Check your current budget
Does the percentage apply to my salary or the whole household?

It applies only to the selected take-home income. If that income is $3,000 per month, a 20% reduction removes $600. Other income entries stay unchanged. A percentage change in gross salary can produce a different change in take-home pay, so use an after-tax estimate.

Can I take a pay cut for less stress?

The calculator can show the budget trade-off, but cannot decide whether the change is worth it to you. Compare the remaining monthly balance alongside hours, workload, benefits, job stability and commuting costs. Enter changed expenses separately and keep a copy of the original report if you want to compare both budgets.

What does “necessary expenses only” change?

This scenario excludes the entire flexible-expense amount you entered. Necessary expenses stay unchanged, and the current-budget results remain available above it. Treat this as a reduced-spending scenario only if you could actually stop those flexible expenses; subscriptions, contracts or family commitments may take time to change.

Does this include changes to taxes, health insurance or benefits?

No. Enter the expected change in take-home pay and adjust your expense entries for costs you would pay yourself. A lower salary does not automatically translate into the same percentage reduction after tax. Employer insurance, retirement contributions and other benefits are not valued by this calculator.

Can a move to a cheaper city offset a pay cut?

It can improve the budget if the reduction in expenses is larger than the loss of take-home income. However, this version does not estimate city costs or moving expenses. You can test a manually entered budget, but include moving costs and changes to housing, transport and benefits in a separate comparison before drawing a conclusion.

Where does the calculator’s data come from?

The current results use only the income, expenses, cash and reserve target you enter. No C2ER, HUD, Census or other city dataset is used in the live calculation yet. Regional references are planned; once available, they will need a source, statistical period and geographic coverage shown beside each value.

Is this free, and are my financial details saved?

The calculator is free and does not require an account. By default, budget entries stay in this tab’s memory and are not submitted to a budget server. You can choose to save a draft in this browser. Internal navigation keeps your entries; refreshing clears them unless device saving is enabled. You can stop saving and remove the draft at any time. A report you save as a PDF remains wherever you choose to save it.
